Summer means more time at the pool and more damage to your hair. Before you and your child go into the pool this summer protect their hair from the chlorine and its drying effects.   All hair color, not just blonde, is susceptible to damage from the elements.   These tips can be used by the whole family to avoid drying, breakage, and thinning hair from chlorine exposure.

Wearing a swim cap is the ultimate protection, but not the most fashionable.  If your child will not don a cap, make sure to rinse their hair before they get into the pool.  If the hair shaft is already full then it limits the amount of chlorinated water that can be absorbed. After swimming rinse the hair with clean water or club soda, do not let hair dry naturally without rinsing.  This will help slow the chlorine’s damaging effects.

Once home, wash your hair with a special swimmer’s shampoo.  The product should have sodium thiosulfate (chlorine neutralizer) in the list of ingredients.  Condition the hair after each shampoo to continue to protect and moisturize the hair.  If the hair has already taken on the greenish tint; then apply the shampoo to dry hair and let it sit for five minutes.  Then shampoo, rinse, and condition.
