National Princess Week was created last April when Academy Award-winning actress, Julie Andrews, joined forces with Target and The Walt Disney Company, to create a week when little girls across the country could “celebrate the sparkle and wonder of every princess — real, aspiring or imagined.” This year, it is April 22 through 26.

It is that time of the year! The weather is beautiful, the end of the school year is near and the most popular event of our wonderful City  of Roswell is back! Alive after Five.

Alive After 5 2013 is here! April 18th will be our 1st event of the year. We expect record numbers of people out and about in the Historic District of Roswell. Highlights of this year’s event include the Alive After 5 Roswell taking place on and around Canton Street, the 2012 addition of Alive After 5 on the Square located at the Roswell Square, and new this year, we welcome Community Corner at the corner of Canton St. and Woodstock Road. Games2u will be at Community Corner kicking off Alive After 5 with its Human Hamster Wheel, Video RV and jumpy house. In April, Relay for Life will also be a main feature at Community Corner. Please stop by and support Relay for Life and enjoy our new Community Corner. Music highlights this month will feature the kick of the Alive After 5 Singer Songwriter Series sponsored by The Roswell Tap. Each month, 5-6 singer/songwriters will be showcased on the park from 5-9pm. After each artist plays, they will head over to The Roswell Tap for more music. Come and enjoy them during Alive After 5 and afterwards at The Roswell Tap. They will compete each month for prize money that evening and a grand prize at the end of the Alive After 5 year. Come out and enjoy this wonderful new talent in our backyard.

On a daily basis, we speak with parents who come in to watch their child get the first haircut, and they say they’re sad to see their kid transform into a “big boy” or “big girl.” They worry that those curls that sprung to life on their baby might straighten. Over 45 total hours of work went into crating the final product – 6 hours of script writing & editing, 10 hours of onsite footage, and 20 hours of video editing. 1. Where are you from? I was born and raised in a small town called Exeter, in New Hampshire.

2. Do you have kids? Yes, I have 3 teenagers and a 7 year old and they keep me pretty busy.

3. How long have you been working at Pigtails & Crewcuts? I join the Pigtails & Crewcuts family in Roswell a year ago.

4. How long have you been styling hair? I have been a stylist for 13 years.

5. What drew you to this career?  I have always had a passion for hair and I love to work with people and have the opportunity to put a smile on their faces!

6. What is the funnies/strangest/cutest/wackiest hair (or otherwise) request from a customer you ever had? The wackiest hair request that I had was from a teenage girl in NH she had asked me to shave all her hair off and leave the bangs long over her eyes

7. How did you respond to the request?  We had fun with it! Took some before and after photos and she was very happy with the outcome. It was memorable, I will tell you that!

8. What’s your ‘secret weapon’ to get a child to stop crying before (or during) their hair cut? Talking to them and acknowledging that they are upset and afraid goes a long way. I try to distract them with a fun toy or a treat. If you remain calm, they will sense that they are safe and you can begin to earn their trust.

9. What are some of your favorite haircut memories when you were a child?  I wish we had a place like Pigtails & Crewcuts when I was a child, but the truth is that I didn’t go to a hair salon when I was a child. My grandmother had a friend who was a stylist and I would visit her for my haircuts. I was always excited to go over to her house and have my hair washed and styled and even got a piece of candy at the end; which was my favorite part. I loved getting my hair washed, so I always take extra care when shampooing a little girl’s hair because I know how special it made me feel when I was a kid.

  Ms. Melissa is known in our salon for being kind and loving. She has her loyal fans that always ask for her. Her bright smile is always on her face and her gentleness puts your little ones at ease. She knows her ‘little friends’ by name and that makes her extra special. When Ms. Melissa is not at work, she can be found cooking and driving her kids around, as she always jokes that her second job is being a ‘chauffeur”
