We are Happy to Introduce an Organic Product Line: Original Sprouts!

Beyond Great Kids’ Haircuts Pigtails & Crewcuts Provides a Total Worry Free Experience!

We’re excited to introduce a new line at the salon called Original Sprout. Made with free and clean formulas, the hair products are created from oh-so-gentle organic botanicals to keep you and your children smelling and feeling naturally amazing. In fact, Original Sprout’s shampoos and body wash have the same pH as pure water, making them gentle to eyes, hair and skin.

We also love that a mom founded the company. Soon after Inga Tritt, a master stylist with professional experience, gave birth to her daughter, Maya, she committed to using only the safest, most natural baby shampoos and bath products on Maya’s soft skin and beautiful, thick hair. But she quickly learned that “natural” doesn’t always mean gentle, and was in a quandary about what products to purchase for her sensitive daughter.

A true entrepreneur, she decided to create her own ultra moisturizing bath and styling products. The line took off, and the rest is history.

We took a few minutes to speak with Original Sprout’s Mariela DeSantiago, and got the inside scoop on organics and the company’s wonderful line of products.

Why is organic important?

Organic is important largely in part because it’s free of pesticides, and, commonly, sustainable. That not only helps our farmers, but our future generations in preserving certain plant varieties that have amazing benefits.

Who should use Original Sprout?

Anyone, like my family and friends that have experienced natural products that don’t perform to their expectations. People who want more moisture, tangle-free hair, long lasting color, and smooth, healthy, silky skin.

Why should I change to an organic shampoo for my family?

As parents, we want to use only the safest products on our family. These products are free of pesticides, growth hormones, dairy and gluten to name a few ingredients, found in many cosmetics.

To learn more about Original Sprout, visit their website or stop by Pigtails & Crewcuts.

Getting to Know Our Stylists…

Ms. Nickie Shelnutt

  • Where are you from originally? I am originally from San Diego, California.
  •   Do you have kids?  Yes, I have a son. His name is Seth Alan. I can’t believe he is a teenager now!
  •  How long have you been working at Pigtails  & Crewcuts?  I have been working for  Pigtails & Crewcuts  for three years.  I started at the West Cobb location and then worked in between West Cobb and Roswell, but now I am primarily Roswell :)
  • How long have you been styling hair?  I have been a hairstylist for 12 years now.
  • What drew you into this career?  I have always loved cutting and styling hair. I specially love hair coloring. I was drawn particularly to cut children’s hair because I am often amused by their imaginations and it is true: “kids say the darnest things!”.
  • What’s the funniest/strangest/cutest/wackiest hair (or otherwise) request from a customer you’ve ever had? I don’t know why a parent was really set in giving his child a mullet.
  •  How did you respond to that request?  We do as the customers asks, so I did it. I jokingly told him to not tell anybody I had done the cut!
  • What’s your “secret weapon” to get a child to stop crying before (or during) their hair cut? I like to blow bubbles. Bubbles seem to cheer them up!
  • What are some of your favorite haircut memories when you were a child? When I was little I competed in gymnastic and always wore pigtails, when I couldn’t get over the uneven bars the coach would give me a little ‘help’ by pulling my pigtails up to get me over the uneven bars One day I cut the pigtails off and eventually I mastered the bars no problems.

When Ms. Nickie is not at the salon she can be found riding her horses  or going for a motorcycle ride. Ms. Nickie really loves to feel the wind in her face. She loves to participate in rodeos competitions, where she is amazingly good! We think Ms. Nickie would be a zoo owner if she could as she loves all animals.

Are You in the Know?

Beyond great haircuts, Pigtails & Crewcuts aims to set the trend on what is hot when it comes to hair trends. Last year we lead the trend with feather extensions and this Spring the hottest trend is color rub, also known as hair chox.

This temporary hair color application is a fantastic way to make yourself stand out or bring out the inner diva for a fun afternoon or evening out! It can be applied at the salon with multiple colors on one streak or a single color or purchased to be done at home to shake things up!

Be the start of a new trend and have everyone else follow! Come in today to get your color rub and see what all the stars will be wearing next on the red carpet! Be a little bit funky and a lot of rock & roll!

How about a green streak for St. Patty’s day?

Getting to Know Our Stylists

Ms. Melissa DeFillipo

1. Where are you from? I was born and raised in a small town called Exeter, in New Hampshire.

2. Do you have kids? Yes, I have 3 teenagers and a 7 year old and they keep me pretty busy.

3. How long have you been working at Pigtails & Crewcuts? I join the Pigtails & Crewcuts family in Roswell a year ago.

4. How long have you been styling hair? I have been a stylist for 13 years.

5. What drew you to this career?  I have always had a passion for hair and I love to work with people and have the opportunity to put a smile on their faces!

6. What is the funnies/strangest/cutest/wackiest hair (or otherwise) request from a customer you ever had? The wackiest hair request that I had was from a teenage girl in NH she had asked me to shave all her hair off and leave the bangs long over her eyes

7. How did you respond to the request?  We had fun with it! Took some before and after photos and she was very happy with the outcome. It was memorable, I will tell you that!

8. What’s your ‘secret weapon’ to get a child to stop crying before (or during) their hair cut? Talking to them and acknowledging that they are upset and afraid goes a long way. I try to distract them with a fun toy or a treat. If you remain calm, they will sense that they are safe and you can begin to earn their trust.

9. What are some of your favorite haircut memories when you were a child?  I wish we had a place like Pigtails & Crewcuts when I was a child, but the truth is that I didn’t go to a hair salon when I was a child. My grandmother had a friend who was a stylist and I would visit her for my haircuts. I was always excited to go over to her house and have my hair washed and styled and even got a piece of candy at the end; which was my favorite part. I loved getting my hair washed, so I always take extra care when shampooing a little girl’s hair because I know how special it made me feel when I was a kid.

Ms. Melissa is known in our salon for being kind and loving. She has her loyal fans that always ask for her. Her bright smile is always on her face and her gentleness puts your little ones at ease. She knows her ‘little friends’ by name and that makes her extra special. When Ms. Melissa is not at work, she can be found cooking and driving her kids around, as she always jokes that her second job is being a ‘chauffeur”

Getting to Know Our Stylists…

Ms. Amanda Wilson

  • Where are you from originally?  I grew up in a small town, Rockmart – GA. I still live there!
  •   Do you have kids? I have three beautiful children, Olivia, Tyler and Presli.
  •  How long have you been working at Pigtails  & Crewcuts?  I  joined the Pigtails & Crewcuts team in October of 2010.
  • How long have you been styling hair?  I have been doing hair for a looooong time, but I have been a certified cosmetologist since 2004.
  • What drew you into this career?  I liked that with a new haircut you can totally brighten someone’s day and make them feel awesome about themselves. I love making others feel great.
  • What’s the funniest/strangest/cutest/wackiest hair (or otherwise) request from a customer you’ve ever had?  I had a child that came in and said he was there for a hair cut, when he got into the chair, he explained: “I really just want ONE haircut!”. After a good laugh, we explained that he needed to have ALL his hairs cut . That was the funniest for me because he was so insistent. The cutest would be the mother of an 11 month old baby asking for a mohak!
  •  How did you respond to that request? I did it because that is what she wanted and it turned out very cute!
  • What’s your “secret weapon” to get a child to stop crying before (or during) their hair cut?  I like to talk to the children in a calm and happy voice, I find it relaxes them. If you ask them everyday questions, it often takes their mind off the haircut. If that fails I offer them a treat, a lollipop or some cookies can often make the difference turning a tough experience into a great kids haircut experience!
  • What are some of your favorite haircut memories when you were a child?   I know that they didn’t have the cute cars and set up like we do today at Pigtails & Crewcuts. Instead, the stylists would take a piece of wood that they would wrap with fabric and a little cushion so it was more comfortable and put that across the adult chair. What made the most difference to me is that they always took the time to make me feel special about the special event I was getting ready for at that time in my life and that is something that I have always carried with me. We get to make children feel special and there is nothing better than that to me!

Ms. Amanda Wilson

When Ms. Amanda is not working she can be found at home cleaning and cooking! “I love a clean house!” and who doesn’t! Ms. Amanda is a great asset to our team because she is a ray of sunshine. In all the years we have known her, we have never seen her without her bright smile right on.  Ms. Amanda recently went from blond to brunette and we love the new look!

She knows she has to be quick and precise when giving your little one the perfect do. Ms. Marjorie has years of experience cutting children’s hair.  Here is Ms. Marjorie in her own words, get to know her lighter side…

  •    Where are you from originally? Charlotte, N.C.
  •   Do you have kids?  I have a 21 year old daughter and a 19 year old son.

  • What’s the funniest/strangest/cutest/wackiest hair (or otherwise) request from a customer you’ve ever had? I had a little boy that wanted a spiked bowl cut.
  •  How did you respond to that request?  His parents said it was okay, so I did it.  The strange part was the next little boy I cut saw it and loved it, needless to say I ended up doing the same cut back to back.
  • What’s your “secret weapon” to get a child to stop crying before (or during) their hair cut? Bribery usually works, whether its two lollipops, or cookies and a lollipop.  The more sugar the better!!!
  • What are some of your favorite haircut memories when you were a child? I was so glad when the Jheri curl become popular because I was so tender headed as a little girl, I really hated getting my hair done.

Are you a raving fan? We hope so!

I opened Pigtails & Crewcuts in West Cobb because I was tired of driving across town to get my kids’ haircuts and getting poor customer service. I thought to myself, we can do better and we deserve better. After much research, I found Pigtails & Crewcuts, a franchise based out of Roswell and we were a perfect match. A year later, we opened our Roswell location because we felt this bedroom community needed an upscale children’s hair salon!

People often thing that a franchise store is different that a single local store. The reality is that I own two location, the West Cobb store and the Roswell location and they are both small businesses. As the owner, there are many hats I wear, but the one I love the very most is my customer relations hat.

I get to reach out to you our customer and ask how we are doing. I do quality control because excellence in customer service is very important to me personally and as it happens to be it is very important to my staff as well. We are not perfect and every now and then we miss the mark. We want you to know that if you are unhappy for any reason at all, we want to know. Was the hair too long, bring your child back and we will get it right. Was it too short, let us know.

You can find customer’s reviews about their children’s haircuts on our Raving Reviews section, but this particular email this morning, totally made my day and pretty much sums up what our goal is in the community. We want you to know that we car and we care deeply about the community we serve.

Hi Nancy. Coming from the retail and restaurant training business where customer service is what sells, I think it is great that you reach out to your customers. I’ll be happy to do the online survey but here is my feedback: First of all I drive 17 miles from Vinings Estates to your location because I am happy with the service and your staff. We currently request Amanda (thank you for offering call ahead). She has cut my 2 year old son’s hair on our last 3 visits and she is wonderful. She made enough of a positive impression on me to remember her name and request her the 2nd time around. I will say that we previously had Keshia and she was great too. Amanda has always been friendly and allows me to watch and talk about the haircut in a manner that doesn’t make me feel intrusive on her job. I know my son doesn’t care what his hair looks like but I do. She has also educated me on a better cut for his hair texture when I noticed it didn’t look quite right after growing out. I also feel that if I was unhappy a day or two later I could go back for help.

I’d like to thank you as well for the charity work you do and pass on to your customers. I participate in your food drives, etc not just because I get a discount but because I want to help support your causes! Thanks for making me a “raving fan” of your business. I will continue to recommend your location on a regular basis.

We want every customer to be  a raving fan. Pigtails & Crewcuts is a kid’s hair salon, but we are so much more, we are friends and family. The next time you get an email asking for feedback, let us know how your visit was because it matters. We have hair accessories and unique gifts, we do birthday parties for your little Princess or Diva, we are an experience and we want to make it perfect!

Our customers rock and I just cannot say that enough.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you and always pushing us to be better.

Best,

Nancy

Valentine’s Day…we have fallen in love with Pinterest!

One of the thins I love the most about owing a business like Pigtails & Crewcuts is that it allows me to come across so many awesome Moms. Yes, we do kids’ haircuts, we do so so much more. As a working Mom myself, I often look for easy and creative ways to jam in as much quality time with my kids as possible. I find that cooking is a great bonding activity for boys and girls alike with their Moms and it kills a couple of birds with one stone:

  • It can become a ‘craft’;
  • It teaches boys that the kitchen isn’t just for “girls”;
  • It teaches both genders their way around the kitchen;
  • It gets something done! (perhaps a dish you need to bring for the school party?)
  • It keeps them busy and entrained and
  • it creates wonderful memories!

Keeping all those things in mind, I finally gave in and entered the wold of Pinterest? Do you pin? It is your one stop shop for all things awesome! I love it and all the fun ideas I found there…since I am willing to do some of the leg work for my awesome customers…here are a few fun things I found that thought you may like:

101 Ideas for Valentine under $5.00
Terrific Valentine Day Treats!
Heart Garland: My daughter LOVED this one!
Cupcakes for the crafty Mom!

Onto more things that we can use every day…let’s see…we found ways to cook chicken:

20 ways to cook a whole chicken: Now if you cook dinner, you know you cook chicken and how many ways can you cook it!

25 ways to jazz up chicken breasts : or perhaps you are a chicken breast family…so here you go!

So…we hope you enjoy entries like this. If you do, feel free to comment and let me know or simple tell me what you think the next time you are in the store for your children’s haircuts. I have an open door policy, I always want to know…how are we doing?

Hope you enjoy this Monday and this post brighten your day on this cloudy day!

Be super!

Nancy
